About Our Stone Garden Urns

Our stone garden urns are hand-cast from reconstituted limestone by Lucas Stone in the UK. We stock 48 pieces across classical urns, Vienna vases, tazzas, troughs, birdbaths, and novelty planters. Prices range from £89 for a compact Vienna vase to £555 for the Grand Victorian Tazza. Every piece comes in Cotswold (warm honey) or Umber (darker brown) finishes. All are frost-proof to -20°C with pre-drilled drainage holes.

Reconstituted limestone is crushed limestone aggregate mixed with cement and cast in moulds. The result looks and feels like carved stone. Over time, moss and lichen settle into the surface and the piece ages naturally. These urns weigh between 8 kg and 40 kg depending on size. The weight keeps them stable in exposed positions without anchoring. Pair them with a stone pedestal to create formal entrance displays. Browse our full garden decor collection for benches, sundials, and ornaments to complement your urns.

"The Grand Victorian Tazza is the showpiece of this range. It sits on a fluted pedestal base and the bowl is wide enough for trailing geraniums and ivy. Customers use pairs of them flanking a front door or at the end of a pathway. The Vienna vases are the surprise bestsellers. At under £120 they look far more expensive than they are. People buy sets of three or four and line them along a terrace wall."

Matt's Installation Tip

Always sit a stone urn on a flat, level surface. Paving slabs or a stone plinth work best. Grass settles unevenly and the urn will lean within a season. For urns on pedestals, use a bead of exterior silicone between the urn base and plinth top. This stops wind rocking the urn without making it permanent. You can break the seal and reposition later if needed.

Grand Victorian Stone Garden Tazza

Matt's Pick for Stone Garden Urns

Best For: Formal lawns, pedestal displays, and entrance pairs

Why I Recommend It: The Grand Victorian Tazza is the largest piece in the range. The wide shallow bowl is perfect for trailing plants. It sits on a fluted pedestal base that gives it real presence. Customers buy pairs to flank a front door and the effect is striking.

Stone Garden Urns: Frequently Asked Questions

What are stone garden urns made from?

Our stone garden urns are hand-cast from reconstituted limestone. Reconstituted limestone mixes crushed limestone aggregate with cement in moulds. The result looks and feels like carved stone. Each piece is available in Cotswold (warm honey) or Umber (darker brown) finishes. The material is frost-proof to -20°C and designed to stay outdoors permanently.

Will stone garden urns survive frost?

Yes, all our urns are frost-proof to -20°C. The reconstituted limestone has low water absorption. Water cannot penetrate deep enough to crack the stone when it freezes. We recommend using pot feet in winter to lift the base off the ground. This keeps the drainage hole clear and prevents the urn freezing to the surface below.

Do stone garden urns have drainage holes?

Yes, every urn and planter has a pre-drilled drainage hole. Drainage is essential for plant health in the UK climate. Without it, waterlogging rots roots and can crack stone in freezing weather. Line the base with crocks or gravel before adding compost. This stops compost blocking the hole.

How heavy are stone garden urns?

Our urns weigh between 8 kg and 40 kg. Vienna vases at the smaller end weigh 8–12 kg. Classical urns and tazzas range from 15 kg to 40 kg. The weight is an advantage because it keeps the urn stable in wind. One person can carry most pieces, though two people is easier for urns over 25 kg.

What compost should I use in a stone urn?

Use a loam-based compost such as John Innes No. 2 or 3. Loam retains moisture better than multi-purpose compost in porous stone. It also adds weight for stability. Place a 5 cm layer of gravel at the base before adding compost. This prevents the drainage hole from blocking.

Do I need a pedestal for a stone garden urn?

A pedestal is recommended for tazzas and smaller urns. Raising an urn to eye level makes the planting and stonework visible. A 40–60 cm pedestal under a tazza creates a focal point visible across a garden. Use exterior silicone between the urn and plinth to prevent wind rocking.

How do I clean a stone garden urn?

Use warm soapy water and a stiff brush once a year. Washing-up liquid is all you need. Avoid pressure washers as they damage surface detail. Most customers leave moss and lichen to develop naturally for an aged look. If you prefer the clean finish, a brush in spring keeps them looking fresh.
