Choosing a stone garden ball
This collection covers two different products with the same rounded shape. Most are self-contained sphere water features. Water rises through the centre and runs over the stone into a hidden reservoir. The Large Ball on Base Stone Garden Finial is solid cast stone with no pump or reservoir.
Start with the job you want the piece to do. Choose a water feature for movement, reflected light and running water. Choose the solid finial for a gate pier, driveway entrance or formal border. If shape matters less than the water display, compare the full water features range.
Three useful starting points
| Design | Best suited to | Useful detail | Current price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Slate Sphere 50cm | Patios and medium borders | Natural slate; pump, light and reservoir included | £479 |
| Grey Flame Granite Sphere | Contemporary gardens | Hand-finished granite; pump and reservoir included | £495 |
| Large Ball on Base Finial | Entrances and formal gardens | Solid cast stone; 53cm high and 68kg | £269 |
Matt's pick
The 50cm Slate Sphere is the easiest place to start. Its shape is simple, while the slate gives the surface plenty of texture. The pump, LED light and reservoir are included. Choose the 60cm version when the feature needs more presence in an open lawn or a large planting bed.
Size, material and position
A sphere can look smaller outdoors than it does in a product photograph. Check the listed width and height against the intended space. Marking the footprint with a garden hose helps before ordering.
Slate has an uneven, layered surface. Polished granite is smoother and gives a cleaner reflection when wet. Rainbow sandstone has warmer bands of colour. Each natural stone piece varies, so pattern and tone will not be identical.
Place a water feature on a firm, level base near a suitable electrical supply. Keep the access point for the pump clear. Read the individual product page for cable, reservoir and installation details. For more traditional flowing designs, see our stone fountains. Stone garden ball FAQs
Are these stone garden balls solid?
Only the Ball on Base finial is a solid ornament. The other current designs are water features with pumps and reservoirs.
Do the sphere water features include a pump?
Yes, the stocked sphere water features include a compatible pump. Check each product page for the full kit and cable details.
Which material gives the smoothest finish?
Polished granite has the smoothest surface in this range. Slate is more textured, while sandstone has visible natural colour bands.
Where should I put a sphere water feature?
Use a firm, level position with safe access to power. Leave enough room to reach the pump and reservoir for cleaning.
Can I use the solid ball on a gate pier?
Yes, it is made for entrances, gate piers and formal garden settings. Check the 68kg weight and base dimensions first.
