After a long time working with gardens, and there's nothing quite like watching a large statue or sculpture find its perfect home. Just last week, we helped Sarah place one of our Stone Garden Ornaments at the end of her winding path. "It catches my eye every morning through the kitchen window," she told me, "like an old friend in the garden."
My favourite moments are when nature starts to claim these pieces. Take the Large Lifesize Deer Sculptures in Tom's wild garden - the bronze coat now wears subtle green touches where the oak trees drop their leaves, while tiny ferns have sprouted around the hooves. You can't plan that sort of natural settling-in - it just happens, slowly and beautifully.
The big pieces need a bit of thinking about. I always tell people to pop a cardboard box in place first - live with it for a few days. Watch how the sun moves across it, see if it feels right as you walk past. Our Stone Garden Statues often end up nowhere near where customers first planned to put them. Sometimes the perfect spot just whispers to you after a few days of looking.
Size isn't everything, mind. I've seen tiny gardens brought to life with just the right large piece - like Jenny's courtyard, where an oversized stone bowl filled with sempervivums steals the show. It's about finding what feels right for your space, your story.
Had a chap in yesterday looking for something "a bit different" - ended up falling for one of our contemporary twisted forms. "It'll give the grandkids something to talk about," he laughed. That's what I love about this job - helping people find pieces that make them smile, that give their gardens a bit of personality.
Looking after these bigger pieces isn't half as tricky as people think. Our stone ages like good cheese - gets better with time. A gentle brush down now and then keeps them happy, maybe a quick wash if the birds have been particularly friendly. The main thing is making sure they're settled in properly from the start - no wobbles or tilts to worry about later.
