This collection brings together 73 pieces carved from six types of quarried natural stone. These include basalt, granite, sandstone, limestone, slate, and rainbow sandstone. Every piece is cut from solid rock rather than cast from a mould. Natural stone water features make up the core of the range, alongside stone bird baths, garden benches, and garden fountains. Prices start at £199 for a birdbath and run to £750 for a large rainbow stone feature.
Natural stone needs no painting, sealing, or coating. It handles UK frost cycles without cracking. It gains character as moss and lichen colonise the surface. These are garden pieces that outlast the gardener. Our guide to stone vs resin ornaments explains why natural stone outperforms every synthetic alternative.
"I visited the quarries and workshops where these pieces are made. Each stone is hand-selected for grain pattern and structural integrity before cutting. The basalt columns come from volcanic formations that are millions of years old. The granite benches are cut from blocks that weigh over a tonne before shaping. There is nothing mass-produced here. Every piece has natural variation in colour and pattern. That is what makes natural stone look right in a garden."
Matt, Garden Ornaments
Volcanic stone, extremely dense and frost-proof. Dark grey to black colour. Ideal for drilled column water features. Weathers to a smooth finish over time.
The hardest natural stone. Available in grey, pink, and two-tone. Used for benches, bird baths, and water features. Virtually indestructible in UK weather.
Warm golden and buff tones. Our largest material group. Naturally porous so it develops a patina quickly. Suits traditional and cottage garden styles.
Multi-toned sandstone with natural bands of rust, gold, and grey. Each piece is unique. Particularly striking as large water features and columns.
Dark grey to charcoal. Smooth, fine-grained texture. Works well in contemporary garden designs. Pairs with steel and concrete landscaping.
Classic cream to grey stone. The traditional choice for garden ornaments. Weathers to a beautiful aged look. Natural fossil inclusions in many pieces.
| Stone Type | Hardness (Mohs) | Frost Resistance | Weight | Best For | Price From |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basalt | 6–7 | Excellent | Very heavy | Water features, columns | £399 |
| Granite | 6–7 | Excellent | Very heavy | Benches, bird baths | £269 |
| Sandstone | 6–7 | Good | Heavy | Water features, columns | £399 |
| Limestone | 3–4 | Good | Heavy | Bird baths, fountains | £199 |
| Slate | 5.5 | Good | Medium | Contemporary features | £0 |
Basalt and granite score highest on the Mohs hardness scale and handle freeze-thaw cycles without damage. Sandstone and limestone are softer but develop a natural patina faster. All five types are frost-resistant in UK conditions. For detailed care advice, see our stone ornament maintenance guide.
For a water feature, choose basalt or sandstone. For a bench, choose granite. For a bird bath, limestone or granite. For a contemporary garden, choose slate. If you want maximum weathering character, choose sandstone or limestone. If you want a piece that barely changes over decades, choose basalt or granite.
Natural stone is heavy. A basalt column water feature can weigh 80kg or more. Always prepare a level, compacted base before positioning. Use a patio slab or concrete pad underneath. For water features, run the pump cable through a buried conduit before laying the base. Moving these pieces after installation is a two-person job at minimum. Get the position right first time.

Matt's Pick for Natural StoneBest For: Entry-level natural stone water feature Why I Recommend It: Solid basalt, drilled through the centre with a polished top and natural rough sides. 50cm tall, sits on a hidden reservoir. The water bubbles up and flows down the column. Volcanic basalt is one of the hardest stones on earth. This piece will outlast the garden it sits in. Price: £399 |
Natural stone bird baths start at £199 and granite garden benches from £309. Every piece in this collection ships with free UK delivery. Our guide to choosing stone garden ornaments covers sizing, positioning, and what to look for when buying. For placement advice, see our stone ornament positioning guide.
Natural stone is quarried rock cut to shape. Reconstituted stone is crushed aggregate cast in a mould. Natural stone has visible grain patterns, fossil inclusions, and colour variations unique to each piece. It is denser and heavier. Reconstituted stone allows more detailed sculpting (statues, figures) at a lower price point. Both handle UK weather. Natural stone is the premium choice for water features and structural pieces like benches.
Basalt and granite are the most durable for UK conditions. Both score 6–7 on the Mohs hardness scale and resist frost, UV, and rain without treatment. Sandstone and limestone are softer but develop a desirable weathered patina faster. Choose basalt or granite if you want a piece that barely changes. Choose sandstone or limestone if you prefer natural ageing.
Most natural stone water features use a mains-powered pump. The pump sits in a hidden reservoir beneath the stone. You need an outdoor-rated power socket within cable reach. The pump recirculates the same water, so there is no plumbing connection needed. Top up the reservoir every few weeks in summer as water evaporates. Some smaller features use solar pumps instead.
Natural stone pieces typically weigh between 30kg and 150kg. A 50cm basalt column weighs around 80kg. A granite garden bench weighs 100kg or more. This weight is an advantage: pieces stay put in wind and are harder to steal. Always prepare a level, compacted base. Delivery is kerbside on a pallet. You will need help to position heavier items.
Quality natural stone handles UK frost without cracking. Basalt and granite are virtually frost-proof. Sandstone and limestone have higher porosity and absorb more water, but UK frost cycles are well within their tolerance. The only risk is standing water freezing inside a bird bath bowl. Break ice each morning rather than adding salt, which damages the stone surface over time.
Clean the pump filter every two to three months. That is the only regular task. Remove leaves and debris from the reservoir in autumn. Top up water levels in summer. Do not use bleach or detergent in the water as these damage pump seals and harm wildlife. In winter, either drain the reservoir and store the pump indoors, or run the feature continuously. Moving water does not freeze as easily as still water.
A level, compacted surface is essential for any natural stone piece. A 600mm x 600mm patio slab works well for column features. Larger features need a concrete pad. The base must be level. Uneven ground causes water features to spill unevenly and can stress the stone over time. Bury the pump cable in a conduit before laying the base. Getting this right first time saves hours of rework.
