Garden Screens: Creating Quiet Spaces
There's something rather lovely about making different rooms in your garden. Our metal garden screens help you do just that - marking out sitting areas, hiding the compost heap, or giving you a bit of privacy from next door's windows. They work particularly well alongside Iron Rose Arches to create proper garden paths and quiet corners.
Each screen comes from our workshop in Bristol, where we make them sturdy enough for British weather but pretty enough to look good even before the plants grow up them. You'll notice the difference in the metalwork - we use proper galvanised steel that won't rust through, and each piece comes with a 10-year guarantee.
Practical Garden Wisdom
If you're thinking about where to put your screen, consider the light first. Our Art Deco patterns cast rather nice shadows that move with the sun - quite beautiful on a pale wall or against light gravel. They work brilliantly with our Metal Gazebos too, helping to make sheltered spots for sitting.
Height matters more than you might think. For most gardens, 1.8 metres gives good screening without feeling too tall. If you're hiding something specific - like bins or an oil tank - you might want to go higher. Our mounting poles make it easy to get the height just right.
Making Screens Work in Your Garden
Plants make all the difference with screens. While they look lovely on their own, adding climbers brings them properly to life. Try clematis for quick cover - the small-flowered ones like 'Princess Diana' scramble up beautifully. For year-round interest, star jasmine keeps its leaves through winter and gives you scented flowers in summer.
You needn't fix screens permanently either. Our freestanding versions work brilliantly for making temporary garden rooms - handy if you like moving things around or want to screen a seating area just for summer parties. They pair nicely with Ornamental Metal Gates if you're making more structured spaces.
Looking After Your Screens
The nice thing about galvanised steel is how little fuss it needs. A wash with soapy water keeps them looking fresh, and the odd check of fixing points keeps everything steady. The metalwork actually improves with age, developing a subtle patina that sits well in a garden setting.
If you're fixing to walls, our bracket sets make it straightforward. For soft ground, the mounting poles go in like fence posts - about 60cm deep gives proper stability. We've designed them so you can adjust the height a bit after they're in, helpful when gardens aren't quite level.
Mind you, if you haven't got anyone handy to help put them up, our fitting service takes the worry out of installation. They'll get everything level and secure, ready for your plants to grow.
